Census Records

The earliest Census documentation that the Museum has in its collection is from 1823 and is a description of the buildings at the Hudson Bay Post. Each building is listed with its dimensions and condition and the year it was constructed on the original foundations of the North West Company Post which was burned during the War of 1812.

1823

Alexander Vidal, Provincial Land Surveyor came to the Sault in 1846 to layout the town plot of the Village of St. Mary's. While doing this job he created a brief census of who was living here at the time and the condition, size and buildings on their property. He was not allowed to list those living at the Post and this was considered "Company Land" and he was not granted permission to record this property or those living there.

Census records were completed every ten years beginning in 1851. There is no census for Sault Ste. Marie for 1851. In the earlier census records little information was collected other than the head of each household. As the years went by, more and more information was collected. The original census records were completed pencil which has faded over the years and some of the early handwriting is difficult to read. When trying to read the original records, the spelling of names in many cases was done phonetically as the recorder heard it, this is especially true with names of ethnic origin.

The Museum has transcribed the Census records for Sault Ste. Marie to the best of our ability from the original. When searching these records please check various spellings of the name that you are looking for.

The most recent census that has been released to the public is 1911. The original census records are on microfilm and can be ordered on inter-library loan at the Public Library.
