Russell H. Ramsay - Broadcaster, Politician, Historian


Russ Ramsay served as manager of the Collegiate Wildcats Basketball Team in the early to mid 1940s. He spent 30 years in the broadcasting industry as president and general manager of  Hyland Radio & TV and Lake Superior Cablevision. He was voice of play by play action for the Soo Senior Greyhounds. His devotion to local sports and athletes led him to write extensively on the subject and he became recognized as the "Sault's Sports Historian." He was MPP for Sault Ste. Marie 1978-1985.

Clergue and his Industrial Empire

Francis Hector Clergue - Industiralist, Visionary, Entrepreneur

 

Francis Hector Clergue was a visionary who began Algoma Steel, St. Mary's Paper, Algoma Central Railway, the Public Utilities, Helen Mine, Gertrude Mines, Sault Ste. Marie Ontario Transit. However, his zeal outdid his business acumen and in 1903 he failed to meet the payroll at Algoma Steel. A riot erupted and the milita was called out. Marine Exhibit

Sault Ste. Marie is geographically located in the north channel of the St. Marys River which joins Lake Superior with Lake Huron. It was a meeting place for the First Nation people of the area for thousands of years. It also played a mjor role in the early fur trade, and was well known for its whitefish. The early history of the city was dependent on the local waterway for transportation of people and goods.

Skylight Gallery

The Skylight Gallery is named for the large rooftop skylight and glass floor which provid a "lightwell" to the main floor. The gallery tells the story of Sault Ste. Marie through a series of vignettes featuring artifacts, photos, maps and text. Installed in the gallery is the last remaining round window which originated in the clock tower prior to the installation of the clock in 1912. Located on the 2nd floor of the museum this gallery is diesgned with chldren in mind. The gallery encourages hands-on exploration of artifacts and provide children the opportunity to explore and learn.
